I am a professor at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA, where I chair the Clinical Psychology department. My research and writing primarily focus on topics related to importance of the full spectrum of human experience, whether individual or social and I have written and presented on issues related to human diversity and social justice. I also am a practicing psychodynamic therapist and analyst working with individuasl seeking to grow their creative aspirations, to develop satisfying relationships, and to face life's losses.

This book argues that the story of the orphan girl Pollyanna (namely, her strategy of playing the “glad games” to manage loss, abuse, and social prejudice) serves as a framework for critiquing historical forms of Western scientific Pollyannaism.
